Project objectives.

Sigel was looking for a solution that would eliminate legacy issues in its hardware and software setup, while ramping up its IT to tackle current needs. This called for a savvy partner to document Sigel’s existing landscape, uncover any weak spots and redundancies, and develop an all new firewall concept that would meet all its security and availability objectives. Sigel found that partner in Bechtle.

A gap in Microsoft support for our obsolete servers prompted us to review our firewall concept. As a medium-sized enterprise we were looking for a pragmatic approach that would protect our investment in Trend Micro’s Enterprise Security Suite, enforce our security policies, and safeguard availability. Bechtle’s expertise, consulting, analysis and, finally, their implemented solution all are proof that we made the right choice.

Hans Wiedemann, Head of IT, Sigel GmbH

Sigel GmbH opted for a duplicate network setup for redundancy using two Cisco ASA 5515-FPWR next-generation firewalls and a corresponding number of VPN licences. The Cisco firewalls deliver advanced protection against modern threats and malware with integrated threat defence for the entire attack continuum—before, during, and after—by combining proven security capabilities of Cisco’s ASA firewall with industry-leading Sourcefire® threat and Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) features in a single device.  Cisco WebVPN allows Sigel’s employees to access their e-mail via HTTPS using various Exchange services (ActiveSync and Outlook Web Access) without the need to establish a VPN connection. Instead these services can now be published via the firewall much like in a reverse proxy setup. Thanks to Cisco AnyConnect on their client systems, the employees also enjoy remote access to the internal company network. Following the installation of the new Cisco hardware, Bechtle went on to dismantle Sigel’s obsolete SonicWall firewall in early 2017. The new hardware environment is backed by a 36-month Bechtle Partner Service, enabling the customer to have replacement equipment on site on the next business day in the event of a failure. The new firewall solution is run by Sigel’s own IT staff, who receive scheduled system maintenance services from Bechtle to enable a fast resolution of any support cases that go beyond defective hardware through Cisco-trained Bechtle technicians based in the region.

Business benefits.

Partnering with Bechtle, Sigel was able to leverage a wealth of expertise in Cisco products to achieve the best solution and meet its security and availability objectives. Bechtle created a status-quo documentation, introduced ideas to achieve optimisations, and offered the technical support to back them up. The new Cisco next-generation ASA firewalls implemented by Bechtle are backed by a Bechtle Partner Service and provide remote access VPN functionality as well as advanced clustering functions to deliver business continuity through high availability and fast, highly secure connectivity. In addition, they are an efficient means to block threats with security built in, considerably reducing costs for procurement, operation, and management.
