Mobile Working vs. Office? How to adapt your IT strategy.

Are you looking forward to getting back into the office as soon as possible or are you a convert to working from home? For me, the choice is clear. I’ve been an ardent supporter of Team Home Office for many years, but Germany as a whole is split. Businesses here are busy discussing how to get back to normal with much stricter hygiene rules front and centre, but there is no blueprint for who should work where.

The crisis has presented the perfect opportunity to (further) develop a future-proof IT strategy, but only if approached in the right way. This means avoiding the following mistakes, which I’m increasingly seeing everyday:

  1. 1. Go it alone.

When rules governing working from home need to be implemented quickly, in my experience decision makers tend to make the same mistake—in an attempt to realise the concept as soon as possible, they try and go it alone. The result is a third of employees are unhappy with the technology, with the lack of communication also criticised by others.

When colleagues and teams are accepting of change, they are happier, which ultimately means that productivity is boosted which is crucial when it comes to overcoming the challenges presented by the “new normal”.

2. Black and white thinking.

Home office vs. real office—why not both? The modern workplace is mobile and flexible and that means having both as an option. What about mixing the two? The issue here is that the IT infrastructure becomes quite complex. It’s questionable whether SMEs are in a position to be able to implement this by themselves without having to redirect capacities away from the core business. This is particularly the case for the many companies where working from home plus virtual meetings with customers, partners and colleagues are unchartered territory.

3. Underestimate the hardware.

The discussion in the first video calls was all about Zoom vs. Microsoft vs. Webex. It’s always best to take a step back and first take a look at the hardware, because only when there is a solid foundation in place can productive, data-secure software be set up, securing a long-term, effective and future-proof working day.

Develop an IT strategy – An outside perspective helps.

I think now is the right time to get to grips with this current exceptional situation and accept it as the “new normal” while at the same time further developing or realigning medium and long-term IT strategies.

These future-oriented IT strategies have to be implemented correctly i.e. with an approach that reduces uncertainties, shows new perspectives and builds on the potential of the company.
