3DEXPERIENCE World 2020 - The highlights from Nashville.

A New Dimension with Experience was the motto of this year’s 3DEXPERIENCE World, hosted by Gian Paolo Bassi, the CEO of SOLIDWORKS Dassault Systèmes, at the Music City Center in Nashville from February 9-12.

The event focused on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, presenting its applications in detail. This included showcasing the full potential of 3DEXPERIENCE to demonstrate how entire companies are able to use 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS in today’s day and age.

The platform connects industrial, mechanical and electrical designers, analysts, mould makers as well as production, marketing and project management staff, allowing them to collaborate on projects.

The following were also presented:

  • 3DEXPERIENCE Collaborative Innovation is a complete SaaS offering that can be used in all areas.
  • 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS supports the entire business process, from sales and marketing to design and technology, to simulations and analysis.
  • 3DEXPERIENCE INDUSTRY offers solutions for various industrial fields and processes.
  • 3DEXPERIENCE Healthcare & Life Sciences specialises in different areas of healthcare and medical technology.
  • 3DEXPERIENCE EDU focuses on the future generation of designers.

Gian Paolo Bassi also presented the next generation of SOLIDWORKS tools:

Selection Helper and Sketch Helper are new machine learning features available in 3D Creator. Mate Predictor, a feature based on artificial intelligence, makes it easier to create assembly groups and offers new automation features.

Gian Paolo Bassi further gave a preview of three features that will be made available this year:

  • 3D Sheet Metal Creator: sheet metal design for any browser
  • 3D Pattern Shape Creator: a new way to create shapes based on visual programming
  • Function-oriented generative design: optimised topology for multi-scenarios and multi-physics applications

Yet another three 3DEXPERIENCE WORKS offers will be made available over the course of the year, each one representing a specific version of SOLIDWORKS.

As it does every year, the event featured presentations that shone the spotlight on customers and their success stories.

In 2020, one such presentation highlighted Magic Wheelchair, a non-profit organisation that builds custom wheelchairs of all types for children with physical disabilities. Two wheelchairs were given away at the 3DEXPERIENCE World event. The first was Beauty and the Beast themed, with detailed, 3D-printed characters from the film. The second was a Star Wars inspired speeder bike, the first Magic Wheelchair fully based on an existing Bowhead wheelchair. Both were designed by Magic Wheelchair employees using SOLIDWORKS and the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Another customer success story was presented by Mike Schultz, a gold and silver medallist at the Paralympics, ten-time gold medallist at the X Games, and founder and inventor of BioDapt. In 2008, Mike lost his leg in a snowmobile accident. Ten years later, he won a gold medal at the Paralympics with a prosthetic leg designed in his own workshop using SOLIDWORKS. Now, Mike’s company produces prosthetics for people around the world.

Sam Rogers, Additive Design Lead and jet suit pilot at Gravity Industries, presented the Gravity Jet Suit, which is fully 3D-printed using metal and polymer materials. Responsible for optimising design within the additive manufacturing of Gravity Jet Suits, Sam showed video excerpts highlighting how design and production have advanced and improved.

Additional customer success stories were told by Eric Haddad, owner of 3DAeroventures, which develops remote-controlled aircraft using SOLIDWORKS and 3D Sculptor, and Danielle Boyer, who founded STEAM Connection at just 19 years old to offer children affordable learning materials.

Our time in Nashville was filled to the brim, and we were pleased to receive prizes in the categories of SOLIDWORKS Elite 190 Club, Top VAR Eurocentral – 1st Year Renewal Rate and Diamonds Club Subscription. In addition, Markus Spiel received an individual award in the 500 Club category as well as for Best Multi Product Sales in ACH and 2nd Best Sales in ACH. Alexander Triendl and Robert Hundstorfer were also recognised for 4th and 5th Best Sales in ACH, respectively.

Our local SOLIDWORKS expert, Mario Wutte, was kept busy participating in the popular Model Mania Contest, where users can show off their SOLIDWORKS skills. The contest comprises the SOLIDWORKS Challenge, which was held for the 21st time, as well as the new 3DEXPERIENCE Challenge. Both the accuracy and time spent designing the part were evaluated.
