Located just 60 kilometres south of Berlin, the holiday resort Tropical Islands opened its doors in late 2004 in the former Cargolifter Hall, which previously had been used for airship production. The resort—open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year—is set against a tropical backdrop featuring a waterpark, shopping boulevard, sauna and spa services, as well as several shows and other entertainment options. Overnight guests can stay in and around Tropical Islands on a camping ground, in rooms or lodges, or in holiday houses. To ensure an unforgettable visitor experience, this theme park requires continuous network availability and sufficiently high performance.
Tropical Island Holding’s goal was to update its IT network with Bechtle’s assistance. One particular focus was on building a high-availability infrastructure that would enable Tropical Islands to boost network performance and availability.
The theme park also sought to implement new video and TV-based services that could be used to transmit data, voice, video and TV signals within the network simultaneously without impairing signal quality.
Following extensive planning, the existing network backbone was upgraded, as were the network switches of key Tropical Islands areas, such as the tropical park, administrative department and data centre. The result was a 20 Gb backbone with switches leveraging Cisco Virtual Switching System (VSS) technology, which multiplies the performance of existing Cisco networks and brings optimisations for real-time communication and collaboration.
VSS technology combines two independent Ethernet switches of the Catalyst 6500 family into one virtual component that acts as a single switch/router, representing a single management/routing instance.
“Our new network backbone and updated Cisco Unified Communications solution have put us in a prime position to meet the challenges of future site expansion. By choosing Bechtle, we knew we would receive the best solution available. The project was a resounding success for Tropical Islands, thanks to thorough preparation, an ideal testing arrangement, smooth migration during live operation, lower maintenance costs and better performance.“
Thomas Volmer, IT Manager, Tropical Island Holding GmbH
The network was designed to support multiple services. Building on the newly enhanced network technology, Bechtle updated Tropical Islands’ existing Cisco VoIP system and upgraded Cisco Unified Communications Manager to the newest version. In addition to managing calls within the Cisco UC environment, Cisco Unified Communications Manager also expands the company-wide phone system to include devices such as IP phones, PC applications, VoIP gateways and multimedia applications.
These upgrades improved the overall performance of Tropical Islands’ powerful and highly secure communications structure while also future-proofing it. In addition to the one-off installation, Tropical Islands also chose Bechtle to provide maintenance services, ensuring top-quality support for maximum availability.
Watch Thomas Volmer, IT Manager of Tropical Island Holding GmbH, explain how the theme park’s IT network was updated with support from Bechtle.
Through its optimised, secure and fast network, the Tropical Islands group is able to keep pace with the increasing number of visitors fuelling its extraordinary growth. The new IT infrastructure and upgraded VoIP technology provide a strategic advantage that will bear fruit when Tropical Islands expands its theme park facilities. Company-wide communication is now supported by a new, state-of-the-art and redundant basic infrastructure. And not only is the new Cisco network more affordable to maintain and support, it also transmits data ultra-efficiently.
The additional performance delivered through VSS technology ensures hassle-free availability of data, voice, video and TV services throughout the network. Moreover, the LAN itself is also highly available and scalable. Tropical Islands now has a cutting-edge VoIP system to control internal and external business communications centrally through its data centre. A cost-effective, advanced communications solution is now also available redundantly throughout Tropical Islands’ facilities, paving the way for future expansion.
