Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzburg in Großkrotzenburg is a state-approved private school run under the auspices of the German Franciscan Province. The school currently has around 1,280 pupils from the Rhine-Main regional catchment area between Frankfurt, Aschaffenburg and Bad Soden-Salmünster. Bechtle has been providing IT services to the school since 2009.
Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzburg had been providing its teachers and pupils alike with a modern environment for versatile, innovative learning and teaching methods. The task at hand consisted of integrating this environment into a future-proof network so that the grammar school would be able to respond flexibly to constantly changing requirements.
"A key requirement for successfully introducing new media to everyday school life is a reliable and fail-safe environment. A good, flexible system must also be capable of providing solutions to accommodate changing needs."
Thomas Wolf, Head, Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzburg gGmbH
In order to establish a future-proof network in the data centre at Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzburg, Bechtle implemented five powerful servers to act as hosts for the grammar school’s VMware vSphere environment in addition to two NetApp systems and a Dell Equilogic SAN storage system. Bechtle recommended networking based on an HPE Coreswitch and 32 fibre-connected HPE switches in various parts of the building. Veeam software is used for backup and recovery of virtual VMware vSphere environments. In addition, Veeam also performs management tasks on the virtual machines. The campus WLAN at the Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzburg provides network coverage across virtually the entire school premises. The wireless network is used by pupils, teachers and other employees alike. A full-time system administrator, who receives support from Bechtle under a service agreement, ensure round-the-clock availability of the IT at Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzberg.
In order to utilise the technical equipment available to its full potential, the creation of a media curriculum was an important element in planning lessons at the school. A media representative from each department defined binding expectations with regard to the development of pupils’ skills so that the introduction, further study and repetition of individual skills could be distributed across all subjects in all years of the intermediate classes. The curriculum is continually being re-evaluated and extended. Other schools within the same catchment area as Franziskanergymnasium Kreuzburg often draw inspiration from the media work being carried out at the grammar school and the equipment in place there, which they encounter as part of media days and visits.
