GirlsDay 2021– I was there

On 22 April 2021, I was lucky enough to take part in Girls’Day and lead my own workshop—so exciting!

The event once again took place digitally this year, but that didn’t stop all the girls getting a look behind the scenes at Bechtle and into the world of IT.
Everything kicked off at 09:00 with a get-to-know-you session before Melanie Schüle, managing director of Bechtle Clouds, welcomed the participants and gave them some insights into her experiences in the IT industry. Afterwards, her colleagues from the Clouds department presented a few practical tasks.
Just after 11:00 came point two on the agenda. Together with Malina (future IT specialist from Münster), we were able to give the curious girls an insight into HTML and CSS. After covering some theory, we presented some practical HTML exercises with which we created and designed a whole page step by step.
The idea to design a website came from the fact that ours (www.bechtle.com) is at the heart of everything we do at Bechtle. To create a website, you need HTML, code (which thankfully isn’t as complicated as Java or other programming languages), and also an editor where the HTML code is entered and saved. CSS is used to make sure that the page and its content look good, using different commands to change the background colours or add colourful borders.
Despite the fact that this year’s Girls’Day solely took place online, those taking part were able to keep up and were hopefully able to take a lot away from the workshop.
It was a fantastic experience to run a workshop and something that I very much enjoyed. It was great to be able to show younger girls that women are represented in the IT world and are achieving a lot.
