From traineeship to million-euro projects.

Tender managers always have something new to do, and you don’t have to wait long before you’re entrusted with real responsibility. No two days are alike and each project presents a different set of challenges. After getting our start through Bechtle’s trainee programme, Alica and I now work in the Public Sector Division, where we have been tender managers for several years. An international focus.

We both followed similar paths to get to Bechtle. We were looking for our first jobs and neither of us had a background in IT. Alica had a degree in European studies and public economics while I had studied international business relations. What drew our attention to Bechtle’s Public Sector Division was the international focus of its Europe team. Today, we assist Bechtle teams in France, England, Ireland and Belgium with responding to public invitations to tender. Whether it’s French or English, working in a foreign language never gets boring.

 

Learning by doing through Bechtle’s trainee programme.

It all began three-and-a-half and two-and-a-half years ago when we started Bechtle’s trainee programme. During the nine months of the programme, we completed a number of modules, in the process discovering various Bechtle business divisions and getting to know new people. Most importantly, we learned from our co-workers and training seminars how best to respond to invitations to tender. Technology training also brought us up to speed in a field that we previously had known little about. We were entrusted with small-scale projects even during our trainee period—because the best way to learn something is to do it yourself.

 

Tenders are boring? Think again!

So what is it that we do in the Public Sector Division? The PSD is a central unit within the Bechtle Group. As such, we exist to support Bechtle subsidiaries in Germany and select European countries as they serve public sector customers. Whenever a public sector customer wants to purchase anything, they’re required to issue invitations to tender—our bread and butter as tender managers. These tenders are anything but dry and boring. On the contrary, they’re complex and there’s always something new and exciting to do. Each one is a new project that challenges us to work with the project team to devise the best proposal, taking into account specific requirements. Our ultimate goal, of course, is to win the contract.

 

Million-euro challenges.

After learning the basics as trainees, we stayed on as tender managers for the Europe Team. We’re still learning new things every day, even after multiple years on the job. Each invitation to tender is different, and we enjoy working with our Bechtle colleagues abroad.

 

Last year we had the opportunity to tackle a new challenge: two European Commission projects that we collaborated on with Bechtle Brussels. Alica helped manage the “Software for Innovation, Diversity and Evolution II (SIDE II)” tender while I led tender management for “Datacentre Infrastructure Solutions (DIS)”. These two were the largest tender projects ever handled by Bechtle Brussels—and Bechtle won both, thanks to an amazing team, immense motivation and hard work by all. It was a special day and we’re both proud to work on a high-calibre team capable of mastering genuine challenges.
