Microsoft’s new Surface line-up: Surface Book 3, Surface Go 2, Surface Headphones 2 and much more.

Back in autumn last year, the next-generation Surface Pro 7 and Surface Laptop 3 were added to the Surface family. On 6 May 2020, Microsoft completed the upgrade of their Surface line-up with updates to the Surface Book 3, Surface Go 2, Surface Headphones 2 Surface Dock 2 and the launch of the Surface Earbuds.

Surface Book 3.

From the outside, nothing has changed, but the interior has been given a complete makeover. There are still 13.5" and 15" versions, powered by 10th Gen Intel CPUs and with a choice of Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650, Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti and Nividia Quadro RTX 3000 graphics. Business models start at €1,529 net for the entry-level model with Core i5 and range to €3,086 for the 15" top-of-the-range model with Core i7, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and Quadro RTX.

 

Surface Go 2.

The Surface Pro’s little brother was a hit when it was originally launched becoming a huge success for Microsoft. It’s only logical then that it was also revamped.

The little brother has grown up a bit with the display now measuring in at 10.5" despite the external dimensions remaining the same. The Pentium Gold is now joined by an Intel Core m3 model plus an LTE option was available straight from the launch. Prices start at €426 net for the business models and go up to €798 net for the Intel Core m3-8100Y model with 8 GB RAM and LTE.

 

Surface Dock 2.

It was a big surprise to find out the Surface Dock wasn’t being left out of the remodelling. From a technical point of view, the new dock comes with a power supply that delivers twice the power than before and the DisplayPort and front USB ports have been replaced by USB-C. What’s more, the Surface Dock 2 delivers new enterprise security features making it possible to control the use of the ports using the Surface Enterprise Management Mode (SEMM). The corresponding settings are written directly in the UEFI firmware, which makes this mode compatible only with the newer Surface models. It’s now also possible to roll out the configured settings to all docks in the company using Microsoft’s own device management system—Microsoft Endpoint Manager. The Surface Dock 2 is available now for €186 net.

 

 

Surface Headphones 2.

Enhanced sound quality, abattery life that has been extended to 20 hours and more flexible ear cups—these are the updates made to the Surface Headphones 2, the latest version of which were presented at the launch event. Otherwise, the headphones haven’t undergone any major changes, the only difference being that they are now available in Matte Black as well as Light Grey. The business version of the headphones will be available from 21 July 2020.

              

Microsoft USB-C Travel Hub.

Whilst not technically a member of the Surface family, the Microsoft USB-C Travel Hub is the perfect accessory for Surface devices offering our connection possibilities:

  • USB-C
  • USB-A
  • VGA
  • HDMI
  • Ethernet

 

For those people who are on the road a lot, for example at customer sites, and who have to present a lot of information, the Hub is a great accessory that reduces the number of adapters you have to carry around with you. The Travel Hub is available now for €152.60.

Debunking security myths. Today: A firewall is enough protection my data.

Debunking security myths. Today: Microsoft is not a security provider.
During my time consulting, I was often confronted with the argument that Microsoft is not a security provider and that it was therefore necessary to choose products from other companies. Many traditionally associate the vendor with Windows or Office and more recently with Surface devices or Xbox games consoles, but Microsoft’s business operations now consist of many different cloud services with Windows playing a secondary roll in 2020 as online services such as the Azure platform or Microsoft 365 products have taken precedence.
