FNT SOFTWARE is a leading provider of integrated software solutions for IT management, data centre infrastructure management and telecommunication infrastructure management. Their customers include more than 500 companies and public organisations from various industries worldwide, with more than half being listed on the DAX30. The company is located in Ellwangen and employs some 300 people at its 5 German sites as well as in the international branches in the USA, Great Britain, Singapore, Russia and Romania.

“Software development is the core pillar of our business and our in-house IT department must ensure that all related services are always available, as unplanned system outages would cause substantial project delays, pushing development costs up”, explains Andreas Esdar, Head of IT Services at FNT GmbH.

Not only do the 100 software developers rely on Scrum management and development environments, they also require communication and collaboration tools. “E-mail plays as big a role as ever, especially as our company has grown considerably over the last few years. However, other Office 365 services have become equally important for our processes,” says Andreas Esdar.

SharePoint Online serves as a central information and discussion platform, Yammer is used as a multi-site bulletin board and, by accelerating communication, Microsoft Teams has been enthusiastically received by employees since the beta phase. But one decision paved the way for agile working at FNT.

Killing two birds with one stone with Microsoft Office 365.

The company had to make their Exchange server highly available in order to handle the growing load. And that would require a massive migration. Because its traditional Microsoft Office licences were also due for an upgrade, Andreas Esdar decided to switch to the cloud-based Office 365. The goal was to tackle both challenges at once.

Bechtle Ulm played a major role in the consultation phase. “We were looking for a partner that could leverage its Office 365 experience to skilfully address the requirements of a company such as ours”, says Andreas Esdar. Bechtle’s wide-ranging expertise convinced FNT that this was the perfect solution for them. “The new Exchange and Office environment was precisely planned and implemented. Of particular advantage was that we could call on specialists from different Bechtle systems integrators, for instance to enhance IT security.

The decision to migrate into the cloud has delivered clear added value. “One of the services of Office 365 is to manage all of the included applications. Switching to Office 365 has freed up resources that we can now redirect towards innovation projects reinforcing our core business.” Licences are always up to date, eliminating the frustration experienced by staff when jumping from an older version of Microsoft software to the latest release.

Budget planning is also simplified as there are no more cyclical migration costs. And Office 365 licensing is now handled by Bechtle as the Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP), which means FNT can purchase additional licences conveniently through Bechtle’s cloud portal instead of having to go through a cumbersome ordering process.

The future is in the cloud.

At the same time as the internal e-mail and office systems moving to cloud technology, FNT is pushing on with its strategy of offering its worldwide customer solutions as Software as a Service with Andreas Esdar as the enabler. “My team not only manage our IT and implement customer system architectures, but now also handle operations. We have developed a cloud platform based on Docker and Kubernetes, on which we provide our own Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions.” The container cloud infrastructure in which the latest generation FNT software is created and runs is located in Microsoft Azure’s public cloud.

Virtual machines purchased as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), are easily scalable and grow flexibly with the required performance as well as the implemented customer projects. With the installation of the FNT public cloud, Bechtle is creating an important interface: “with the Commissioned Data Processing Agreement with Bechtle as cloud provider, we are able to guarantee the highest compliance standards and promote market acceptance of this new style of provisioning.” says Andreas Esdar.

The model that has been created in collaboration with Bechtle supports FNT in combining the advantages of the globally available Azure cloud with its highly developed technology stack, ultimately leading to a better position in the market. “We are transforming our business by moving into the cloud and are able to offer our customers a variety of options—from on-premise use to suitable cloud versions.
