Developed by FARO, the portable Freestyle3D scanner sets a new bar for mobility and performance. The 3D software included with the scanner, SCENE Capture, is able to process huge data volumes on site thanks to the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. And as FARO’s IT partner, Bechtle readies the innovative solution for immediate use.
FARO develops and markets portable coordinate measuring machines, 3D imaging devices and software worldwide. Its offering now includes a mobile 3D scanner perfect for measuring equipment or buildings quickly and accurately from various angles. The FARO Freestyle3D is suitable for a wide range of applications, from construction and industrial production to forensics. It comes with the 3D software SCENE Capture and the Surface Pro 4 for a complete on-site data processing solution.
FARO Technologies, Inc. is the world’s leading provider of 3D measurement and imaging technology. Its solutions are used for parts and assembly inspections, production planning and inventory documentation. They also aid in the investigation and reconstruction of accident sites and crime scenes as well as the digital documentation of historical sites.
Over 15,000 customers, representing more than 30,000 installations, rely on FARO’s measuring technology all over the globe. The company is based in Lake Mary, Florida (USA), with European headquarters located in Korntal-Münchingen, Germany, close to Stuttgart.
FARO’s priority was to find a lightweight, handy device that is still powerful enough to process scanner data in its 3D software.
3D software requires a lot of computing power, which the Surface Pro 4 provides.

In each frame, the software identifies scanned objects and links them to their position in the following frame. Comparing the positions shows how the user has moved. The result is a 3D image that can be displayed on a high-performing device. “SCENE Capture processes approximately 10 MB of data per second and displays scanned objects in real time at up to 70,000 points per second,” reports Dr Döring. Following rigorous testing, FARO chose the Surface Pro 4 for its ability to meet stringent performance and graphics requirements.
In addition to its notebook-like performance, the Surface Pro 4 was also chosen for its design, which complements the Red Dot design award-winning Freestyle3D. “The stylish, silver magnesium housing of the Surface Pro 4 harmonises perfectly with the Freestyle3D,” explains Dr Döring.
To ensure that customers receive the Surface Pro 4 ready to use, FARO partners with the Bechtle IT System House Rottenburg. Bechtle procures the devices, installs the SCENE Capture software and labels the devices according to FARO specifications. They are then sent to customers together with the Freestyle3D scanner for plug-and-play convenience.
