Lotto24 is Germany’s leading state-licensed provider of online lotteries, offering a variety of products. Lotto24 has far outpaced the competition since its founding in 2010, boasting just shy of 900,000 registered customers. The Hamburg-based company has been listed in the Prime Standard segment of the German stock exchange since 2012. As a fast-growing, service and customer-focused business, Lotto24 strives to offer an ultra-convenient, secure and contemporary gaming experience.
Lotto24 had decided to discontinue its previous strategy of having a provider operate its online platform. Instead, it wanted to insource the infrastructure and applications to its own, new data centre. The selected data-centre solution would have to simplify management and make it easier to quickly implement IT developments. Lotto24 also aimed to homogenise its IT to further improve availability and reliability on the one hand and enable a flexible response to peak loads on the other.
Our new data-centre solution, which we manage in house, has given us a future-ready online platform. Across-the-board virtualisation and fast network components enable the capacity required for peak loads. It also allows us to respond quickly and flexibly to new needs and requirements. With Bechtle as a reliable partner, we were able to implement this project quickly without any interruption to our operations.
Kai Hannemann, Head of IT/CTO, Lotto24 AG
Lotto24 decided to introduce three identical data centres to meet its network’s demanding availability and reliability requirements: two for production and one for developing and testing. All three were based on a Dell EMC VSPEX reference architecture with HP c7000 blade systems and the latest Virtual Connect technology for LAN and SAN connections. In addition, the data centres were equipped with three Dell EMC VNX 5200 hybrid storage systems featuring flash drives. Servers were virtualised using VMware vSphere 6 Enterprise Plus, guaranteeing reliable, optimised performance across all layers. The Dell EMC VSPEX solution implemented in the two production data centres improves data availability and reduces the risk of downtime.
The third environment, also virtualised, is reserved for developing the Lotto24 application, allowing the entire process, from software development and testing to operational handover, to be handled in house. Both live data and backups are replicated between sites, protecting Lotto24 from the consequences of a complete data-centre failure.
The Cisco network components used by Bechtle for LAN and Wi-Fi connections also meet the high infrastructure requirements driving Lotto24’s online platform, ensuring extreme mid-tier scalability and flexibility, as well as easy, efficient implementation.
The fully virtualised solution implemented by Bechtle for Lotto24 is not only highly reliable, it can also be expanded as necessary. In addition, it enables faster deployment, higher efficiency and lower operational risk. And because all components are now managed by Lotto24’s internal IT department, the company has more flexibility in the development, scaling and operation of its critical infrastructures. This is particularly important when automatically deploying virtual machines and applications, and it’s essential for the further evolution from private cloud to software-defined data centre (SDDC).
