Bundeseisenbahnvermögen – A centralised IT landscape for simple operating system migration.

The Bundeseisenbahnvermögen (BEV) is an organisation under the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. It is the top authority for civil servants working for Germany’s railway. The BEV’s central administration is located in Bonn, with four additional offices in Hanover, Cologne, Frankfurt and Karlsruhe, each of which is linked to further field offices.

Project details.

  • Virtualisation
  • Public sector
  • Citrix
  • 250–1,500 employees

Project objectives.

In addition to migrating its client and server operating systems, the BEV wanted to overhaul the entire system architecture, centralising it as much as possible. The goal was to design a homogeneous IT landscape prioritising security, availability and cost-effectiveness. The previous system created a lot of manual work for the IT department, which the BEV wanted to decrease by extensively standardising and automating IT management. The manpower saved would then be invested in integrating new systems and services, for instance to enable employees at different sites to work together in virtual teams. However, the new system environment would still have to support the applications already in use at BEV. A further objective was to increase the entire system’s cost-effectiveness.

We were able to implement our project on time and within budget thanks to Bechtle’s virtualisation expertise and drive to do whatever it takes to make the project a success on both sides.

To achieve the project’s goals, Bechtle chose to implement Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, which deploy virtual applications and desktops to all BEV employees as a real-time on-demand service. These convenient Citrix solutions are compatible with any device, and they also ensure maximum security and availability as all data is stored centrally. Citrix NetScaler—with its access control and load balancing features—was also implemented to ensure superior performance when deploying applications. And thanks to Microsoft System Center, the various servers and VMware vSphere-virtualised systems are managed centrally.

Business benefits.

The computing power and storage capacity of all of the state-of-the-art products featured in the new IT landscape are scalable, so they will be able to adequately meet the BEV’s increasing requirements for years to come. In addition, the system overhaul resulted in substantially more stable IT operation and easier administration, which saves money and frees up IT staff to concentrate on other tasks. Optimising the use of IT resources also reduces energy consumption, helping drive the goals of the Green IT initiative. And because upgrading software is now a cinch, the BEV was able to quickly and easily migrate away from its outdated Windows XP operating systems. Moreover, the tools implemented within the new, centralised IT landscape significantly increased data security while also meeting all compliance obligations.
