Memory shortage – How organisations can respond.
Reasons behind the memory shortage
A few weeks ago, the shortage mainly affected RAM (DDR4 and DDR5). Supply is now tightening for flash storage (NAND) as well, which is used in SSDs, USB sticks and even televisions and this is pushing prices up across these product categories. PC manufacturers report that memory now accounts for roughly a third of total production costs, which is twice as much as last year.
One consequence is that low‑cost entry‑level laptops may become harder to find because profit margins are too small. Another factor is that manufacturers are prioritising more profitable memory types such as HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), server DRAM and NAND flash. Production lines have been shifted accordingly, which further reduces the availability of standard memory modules.

It’s about your organisation’s ability to move forward.
Many companies are feeling the impact of rising RAM and NAND‑flash prices as delays in digitalisation projects are becoming increasingly likely. These include, amongst others:
Hardware refresh cycles slow down, increasing several risks.
Planned rollouts of clients and servers stall.
ERP and database modernisation projects are postponed.
AI and analytics platforms cannot be deployed.
Backup and archiving projects lack the required hardware.
This all means necessary modernisation efforts are delayed and can quickly become a barrier to your organisation’s future readiness. We recommend discussing your situation with an experienced IT partner and reviewing tailored options for your environment. Get in touch. Our experts are happy to advise you.
