Challenge.

Approx. 250,000 customers in the Celle and Uelzen region rely on Celle-Uelzen Netz GmbH (CUN), a subsidiary of the SVO Group, on a daily basis. CUN is the local provider of electricity, gas, water and fibre optic networks and grids and has invested a lot of effort into their expansion. Furthermore, their specialist departments work with data such as floor plans, real estate documents, geomapping, and much more, on a daily basis. For their daily work and the visualisation of data, they rely on video and computer programs that require a lot of computing capacity.

When the time came to renew the server landscape, Celle-Uelzen Netz GmbH’s choice to stay with Dell servers was an obvious one. All they needed was the right partner offering the latest generation of servers and switches with powerful processors and larger RAM at a good price who could also provide deployment, installation and the initial configuration of the systems. Bechtle was awarded the contract as, besides the devices and services required, its offer included the required licences and was presented to CUN as an all-around more complete package.

We were impressed as early as the bidding phase. Bechtle kept us updated regularly on project information such as delivery dates so that everything went exactly as we wanted. Thanks to the latest generation of Dell servers, our specialist departments now have the performance they need for their applications, and will continue to have this in years to come thanks to Bechtle. This gives us the firepower we need to meet all future requirements.

Solution.

Bechtle and CUN collaborated closely with Dell to design a suitable and modern solution for the server and network (switches) that support the customer’s applications and can provide performance for years to come. CUN chose the Dell PowerEdge R750 server, for which Bechtle and CUN drew up a requirements catalogue and, in close coordination with Dell, submitted an offer that, in addition to the hardware and its configuration, also included the  installation of the components in the data centre, their documentation and all the necessary VMware licences for the servers. The order was to be delivered and implemented within two months at CUN’s request. Due to the delivery bottlenecks during the pandemic in 2022, this was a challenge, but Bechtle mastered it perfectly thanks to its high partner level at Dell and very good advance coordination with regard to the partial deliveries. Upon delivering the goods, Bechtle created the required server configuration on the basis of the sizing and requirements list. When the 13 Dell PowerEdge servers that had been ordered arrived, Bechtle assisted Celle-Uelzen Netz GmbH with their installation and deployed the configuration. In the meantime, all Dell PowerEdge R750 servers have been installed and commissioned.

By adding two Dell Connectrix B-series switches, Bechtle enhanced the connectivity of CUN’s second data centre and with Fibre Channel connectivity of up to 32 gigabits per second, the switches have the fastest transmission rates and can excellently bridge distances of up to 10 km, meaning that there are no more jams when transferring data at CUN.

Business benefits.

The new server landscape with its two switches mean that Celle-Uelzen Netz GmbH now has more power, performance and faster data transfer rates. All of the inhouse applications, no matter how compute-intensive or data-heavy they are can now be operated with ease. Thanks to the close coordination during the ordering process between Bechtle, Dell and CUN, all the desired components were delivered on time and installed before the end of CUN’s financial year, despite the delivery bottlenecks that were common at the time.
