Challenge.

As the largest medical provider in the Weser-Ems region of Lower Saxony, Oldenburg Hospital and its 20 clinics, five institutes and ten centres provide a wide range of semi-residential, in and out-patient medical services making it a critical infrastructure and meaning that seamless administration and a powerful, well-functioning and, above all, secure IT infrastructure are essential. Only with this strong foundation can the Oldenburg Hospital efficiently coordinate operations and provide the best possible care to its patients. Data security is a top priority as confidential patient data are stringently protected in Germany through regulations such as the EU GDPR, IT Baseline protection, KRITIS and BS3, all of which the hospital has to comply with when it comes to Storage Area Network (SAN) archiving, mail traffic and sharing data.

This also applied when it had to modernise its existing SAN infrastructure, which consisted of a relatively complex storage virtualisation setup distributed over several data centres on the hospital campus. The IT department was already using Rubrik as an efficient and integrated backup and data management solution, and were therefore on the look out for something that would work seamlessly with it. After an intensive research into various manufacturers, the mirrored storage solution based on the Pure Storage flash array came out on top as the aim was to install an all-flash solution. i.e. only SSDs.

We are extremely happy with Bechtle’s work. The noticeable increase in speed coupled with the simple Pure Storage management are outstanding. We save time, and the solution is secure as Bechtle installed everything in accordance with critical industry criteria, which was incredibly important for us. We have also freed up a lot of space in our racks.

Solution.

Oldenburg Hospital’s RfP was aimed at finding a service provider that could implement a new, Pure Storage, redundant, all-flash array and replace the existing infrastructure without an impact on operations. As Bechtle holds the highest partner status at Pure Storage and Rubrik and offered the best value for money, the IT service provider was commissioned to roll out the new storage infrastructure. Bechtle mirrored the new Pure Storage all-flash array solution in two of the hospital’s data centres that are connected with each other via a modern fibre channel. Together with a hospital project manager, Bechtle set up the all-flash array storage parallel with the existing storage virtualisation, installed and configured it before starting with step-by-step data migration.

The entire process took place during ongoing operations so that the data remained available- The new system has a considerably higher capacity of just under 300 TB with data automatically deduplicated and managed by the Rubrik data security solution that uses AO to continually monitor the flow of data. The system also automatically detects risks such as ransomware as well as any other signs of threats. Furthermore, the Rubrik solution uses a zero-trust architecture that ensures that 100% of secured data can be quickly recovered and tested in the event of an encryption attack.

Business benefits.

The modern and secure architecture Bechtle installed as a combination of Pure Storage and software means the hospital fully complies with extremely high security standards and regulations. Critical industry requirements are also met thanks to the Rubrik solution. The new storage infrastructure solution is not only secure and in compliance with data protection regulations, it is also faster and fit for the future. Measuring in at just two to three units, it takes up very little space in the data centres, consumes less energy and needs considerably less cooling The combination of the Rubrik all-flash array with the Pure Storage backup and security solution facilitates operations at the Oldenburg Hospital and minimises maintenance.
