High availability in your data centre.

Reliability is a very important topic for many companies. Downtime can cause SMEs and corporations to lose up to $18,000 per hour (Veeam Availability Report, 2017), a reason many are turning to highly-available IT systems. But high availability is not all created equal.

Bechtle’s highly-available IT systems provide the highest reliability. Redundant hardware components ensure that other servers are standing by to take over if the original servers fail.

And that’s not all… Reliability has to go beyond servers and network nodes. What happens in the event of a power cut? How many redundant grid providers are required to provide 99.99% power coverage? This is why we look at high-availability as a holistic data centre concept. Only if all vulnerable components are considered can we guarantee high availability.

When can a system be considered highly-available?

Many vendors like to talk about high availability (HA), without actually specifying the extent of maximum downtime. Fundamentally, high availability should be at least 99.99%. That sounds a lot, but still means that there can be 0.87 hours of unplanned downtime per year.

High availability and business continuity.

Service downtime isn’t just costly, but it also makes everything in your company grind to a halt. Disaster recovery therefore needs to be set up like a redundant IT architecture. But how much time is acceptable to get a system up and running perfectly again? Bechtle calculates the recovery point objective value with the customer from the very start, to determine the maximum a customer can allow for downtime.

Contain failures before they happen.

Many interruptions can be detected and reduced before they happen. Downtime can be caused by:

  • Defect hardware or incorrect use
  • Operating errors by technical staff
  • Incorrect configuration
  • Outdated hardware
  • Planned but incorrect maintenance
  • Cyber attacks
  • Power cuts
  • Environmental disasters (flooding or storms)
  • Wilful damage

High availability therefore starts with our consulting services. We identify the services you need, design a disaster recovery plan, and create overarching monitoring for your entire data centre.
