Bechtle Expert Talks.

Talking to HP about sustainability:
With Alexandre Silveira – Marketing Manager.

Cultivating Sustainability was the title of our Sustainability Report 2021. We take responsibility for our present actions in order to protect future generations.

We want to lead by example and inspire the IT industry to be even more sustainable, which is why we got together with HP to discuss the topic in an informal (and virtual) setting. We created short videos with the answers to each question asked. You can choose the question that interests you most, but we recommend taking a peek at all of them to get the full Bechtle Expert Talk experience.

1.  Sustainability is often closely associated with recycling. Do you agree?

“I agree that recycling is a very important component of a sustainability strategy.

Yet, this only scratches the surface of what sustainability is.”

2.  Based on your experience, which are the greatest challenges for sustainability on the IT market?

“In the IT industry, product renewal happens at a very fast pace because of the innovation on the market. (...) With this innovation, which translates into more products and product rotation, we also have an increased responsibility.”

4.  Why should organisations invest in sustainability?

“We all have to do our part. (...) We need to prevent an average global temperature rise of 1.5°C above pre-industrial era levels.” (...) It is also important that organisations invest in sustainability because that is what people expect from them. ”

5.  How can organisations include sustainability in their short and medium term strategies?

“They have to start by looking inwards. (...) Before an organisation defines a communication strategy, it should first make sure what they are doing really is a sustainable practice.”

6. Bechtle’s sustainability consists of 4 pillars:

  • Ethical business practices
  • People
  • Environment
  • Digital future

Does HP’s sustainability strategy align with these pillars?

“Let’s say there is a marriage here, a match as they say, between Bechtle’s and HP pillars.

They align—we have three main pillars and Bechtle four.”

HP Elite Dragonfly

“As far as personal computing is concerned, we have a lot of equipment that already contains plastic that would otherwise end up in the oceans. HP Elite Dragonfly, our flagship product and one of the best known, has a higher percentage of recycled plastic material.”

Bulk packaging

“(...) it would not make sense for a customer that buys 50, 100 or 500 PCs to have a package for each product, as this would mean more waste. (...) HP conceived a bulk packaging programme where we can create a single package for all PCs or printers. ”
