The benefits of ergonomic workstations.

Employees feel better and healthier if they can perform their work comfortably. That’s why it’s important to invest in ergonomic workstations. Over time, an unsuitable working environment and incorrect posture can lead to muscoskeletal disorders such as back, neck, shoulder, elbow and wrist pain. There are many solutions that can be used both at home and in the office, such as compact wrist rests and ergonomic computer mice that can be moved with minimal effort.

57% of Belgian employees with work-related health problems report physical complaints**. This is based on a European study in the 27 Member States. 58% of those working from home suffered from back pain, 53% from neck pain and 39% from shoulder pain***. This can be caused by an incorrectly positioned office chair or desk.

Two solutions for work-from-home and office ergonomics.

An ergonomic mouse and keyboard.

Even small ergonomic accessories such as a mouse and a keyboard can make a huge difference. First of all, make sure you don’t have to reach too far to control your mouse – it should be close to your keyboard. If it’s too far away, you’ll put too much pressure on your shoulders. You should also place your keyboard on the edge of your desk. This will prevent wrist pain and help you to sit up straight, with your shoulders relaxed.

If you’re working on a laptop, it’s a good idea to have a separate keyboard and mouse. More importantly: make sure you have a wrist rest on the keyboard and on your mouse mat (or next to the mouse). Wrist rests stop you placing your forearm at an angle to your wrist. Ergonomic mice are shaped in a way that encourages you to put your hand in a vertical position – this is a natural position to move the mouse and reduces muscle tension in your wrist and arm.

Monitor arms.

Poor posture, neck pain and tired eyes are all consequences of staring at a computer for hours on end in the same position. An adjustable monitor helps you to maintain a healthy posture, relieving aches and pains. The risk of eye, back and neck complaints can be reduced with a good-quality, adjustable monitor.

If you’re working at a fixed desk, having a monitor arm provides more comfort and space. With a flick of the wrist, you can raise your screen to the right height and create more space on your desk. A monitor arm has many advantages: You no longer have to bend your body to see the screen at eye level, you have more space on your desk and you can mount the monitor arm wherever you want (walls, ceilings, desks).
