Surface Hub 2S Teams Rooms Devices on Windows

IMPORTANT UPDATE – Microsoft Teams Rooms on Surface HUB 2S.

From January 2024, a new update will be made available for the Surface HUB 2S
allowing them to be used as Teams Rooms on Windows devices.

The migration is voluntary, but please be aware that once migrated, there’s no going back!

Once the Teams Rooms device update has been installed, O365 integration will no longer be supported and it will not be possible to run native apps. You’ll therefore lose access to PowerPoint, Edge, your browser and OneDrive.

However, in return, you’ll get a fully-compatible, premium Teams Rooms device from which you can launch Zoom and Webex meetings with a single click.

Users, who would like to install the update, will benefit from the following features:
  • Your device / resource account will not change. However, you will need a Teams Rooms Basic or Teams Rooms Pro (recommended) licence. Click here for more details.
  • The Surface HUB is on the same operating system / SW stack as other Teams Rooms on Windows. Latest features such as Front Row and Chat will be available straight away. Click here for more information on the features available for Teams Rooms on Windows.
  • The whiteboard experience will be optimised. An ad-hoc whiteboard session can transformed into a meeting without having to make an appointment meaning remote attendees can join at any time.
  • You’ll be able to launch Zoom and Webex from the home screen with a single touch.
  • The update will make the HUB compatible with each Teams-certified device and screen. What’s more, users will benefit from optimised management features in Teams Admin and Intune (MDM).
  • Users will continue to enjoy unlimited mobility thanks to the mobile stand and APC battery. The HUB is an iconic piece of premium hardware with a narrow bezel and 20-point multi-touch, offering users a natural experience for better collaboration.
  • Content will still be able to to be shared wirelessly using Miracast and in Teams meetings if the HUB is being used as a meeting resource. Content cannot be shared via HDMI or USB-C. It is not possible to project /mirror the HUB screen using the mini DP output.
Not sure about the update?

You can take advantage of Windows 10 Teams support (security updates and troubleshooting) until 14 October 2025, after which you will either need to switch to Teams Rooms Device or upgrade to Windows 10/11 Pro or Enterprise. Upgrading to Windows Pro or Enterprise will retain all current features (O365 / OneDrive / browser / etc.) but each user has to log in with a username and password meaning logging out is no longer automatic.
