Cast an eye over the market and one thing becomes clear: Customers are increasingly turning their backs on perpetual licences in favour of flexible options. Citrix has spotted this and is adapting its business model accordingly. From 1 October 2020, Citrix is switching to a subscription licensing model to reduce the complexity of their offering. Read on to find out what that means for customers and why now is the perfect time to think about strategic topics such as switching to Citrix cloud services.

Demand for flexible licensing models is increasing. For many years, perpetual licences have shaped Citrix’s licensing offering for on-premise environments. This gives customers a permanent Citrix licence valid from the time of purchase for which support can be extended every year. Alongside this classic concept, the vendor had already established a new licensing model in the form of Citrix Cloud Services which are exclusively available as a subscription. This means that the customer can purchase Citrix technologies as a subscription for one or more years and support is already included.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us how important it is to be flexible. Workstations need to be quickly and securely provisioned—sometimes for an indefinite period of time. Large investments in perpetual licences without being sure how long they will be needed or if changes to the amount will have to be made are quite risky.
What’s more, a lot of businesses currently find themselves in the midst of upheaval or preparing for the digital transformation: Some customers already use the cloud while others prefer to leverage hybrid scenarios, but there are also those that are continuing to put their faith in on-premise environments with a view to make the switch in the coming years. Subscription models are the perfect way to fulfil the requirements of all of those scenarios, plus the high levels of flexibility enable a successful reaction to dynamic conditions whilst taking into account the optimum strategic direction in the coming years.
Citrix wants all their customers to gain from the benefits of the subscription model and simplify licensing opportunities, and so they are making the switch to subscription licences only. From 1 October 2020, Citrix will discontinue its perpetual licenses for on-premise workspace products, and so these shall only be available as on-premise or Citrix Cloud subscriptions from Autumn 2020. This change will affect new purchases as well as extensions, but not perpetual licences which have already been purchased. There will also be no technical changes to the products.
The benefits of subscription licensing:
Now is the perfect time to find out more about Citrix Cloud Services and all they have to offer, in order to be optimally prepared for the future, not only in terms of licensing but also in terms of technology.
On-premise subscriptions are ideal for moving step by step towards the cloud thanks to their flexible durations, but perpetual licences, which have already been purchased, are also very well suited for making a gradual switch towards the cloud by leveraging hybrid rights. In this way, the customers’ desire go at their own pace can be fulfilled.
