United towards intelligent towns.
digitalisation opportunities!
Cities and regions are facing a host of challenges ranging from demographic and climate change and migration to energy and resource crises, digitalisation and ever-changing demands. We see the impact of these in our more diverse societies, heat islands, flood waters, rising prices for resources, too much traffic and the resulting jams and pollution—conditions that have repercussions on our quality of life and don’t do much to support our growing desire for sustainability. The good news is, cities can overcome these challenges by seizing the opportunity to become smart with the aim of becoming more attractive and sustainable for citizens.

What is a Smart City?
A Smart City is an intelligent urban area that leverages new technologies to make activities faster and more efficient, opening the door to more opportunities. They do this through the intensive generation, processing and use of digital data and networking various parties and systems, allowing them to monitor their progress towards achieving their economic, social and ecological goals.
Smart Cities are therefore founded on the digital networking of various systems and players to create the basis for new opportunities, which can be divided into four categories:
Data-driven (real-time) control e.g. in traffic monitoring to reduce energy consumption.
Evidence-based planning e.g. in digital urban area management to minimise built-up areas.
Digital enablement e.g. in data availability for consistent economic growth.
New digital services e.g. in public transport route planning to optimise travel times.
The benefits of Smart Cities.
The way Smart Cities use and network their data brings a host of benefits:
- The ability to consider the views of citizens
- An improvement in administrative service quality
- The more effective management of ecological resources
- Using digital data to create an overview of system-wide interdependencies that can be analysed against future (simulation) and past (storage) data.
- A better understanding of decisive factors in the design of liveable spaces
- New planning tools transform digital data into future-proof resilient infrastructures
- Provisioning public data creates an ecosystem of opportunities that lays the foundation for creating value through digitalisation

A holistic approach to urban development.
Most urban areas face a rocky path as they attempt to transform into Smart Cities and municipalities, public utilities and regional data centres need to collaborate to smooth the way.
Municipal administration is responsible for the implementation of a host of measures, however if the decision makers don’t have the right data, they won’t be able to make well-founded choices. Communication between the various agencies is, therefore, essential in order to ensure that measures are implemented in the best possible way.
Public utilities are in charge of implementing technologies with which data can be collected. Intra-departmental collaboration is also important here as the data has to be shared with third parties such as the municipalities.
Regional data centres ensure maximum security for IT applications. They establish a data interface and transfer solutions between the various local authorities.
These facts make it clear that taking a holistic approach to the transformation process is crucial as all three players need to be able to co-operate with ease in order to leverage digitalisation in the cities of tomorrow.
