Why use fibre optics in AV solutions?

As display sizes become ever-larger, content needs to be generated and transmitted to the screen in equally high resolutions. The rooms displays are being used in are also bigger than ever before, extending the distance between source and screen and quickly pushing traditional copper cables to their limits. And that’s where fibre optics come in.

A winning combination.

Transmitting broadband AV signals requires hybrid AOC (active optical cables) which combine copper and fibre optic cables. The AV signal’s high bandwidth requirements (48 Gb/s) are transmitted as pulses of light through fibre optic cables, while control signals that require less bandwidth are transmitted via the copper cables. This approach allows converters and the power supply to be connected to electronic devices with ease. In this way, these cables unite the benefits of fibre optics with the ruggedness that copper cables provide.

This cable supports HDMI resolutions up to 8K at 60 Hz uncompressed or 10K with Display stream compression (DSC) and 4K at 120 Hz making it the ideal choice for gaming and video editing.

DP signals with 8K resolutions over a distance of 50 m.

By supporting bandwidths up to 40 Gb/s, the UHBR10 (Ultra High Bit Rate – 10 Gb/s per lane) transmits DisplayPort 2.0 resolutions at 60 Hz up to 8K uncompressed and 10K with (DSC) (display stream compression) at 144 Hz up to 4K. Perfect for gaming and video editing.

Connector technology.

The highly compressed converter electronics needed to convert AV signals to fibre are integrated into the AOC connectors and powered directly by the source device’s AV interface.

HDR.

Both HDMI and DisplayPort AOC cables enable the transmission of AV content with HDR thanks to support for 10-bit/channel colour depth. This allows content with an extended colour gamut and high dynamic range to be displayed in exquisite detail. Moreover, the gold-plated pins and connectors ensure long-term corrosion resistance and signal reliability

Low interference.

Thanks to the combination of fibre optic and copper cables, a very low electromagnetic field is generated during use and these cables are very resistant to RF and EMI interference. This makes them the perfect choice for use at home, in digital signage, digital out-of-home media, industrial and healthcare applications.
