Key topics in the area of government institution IT monitoring.

IT in public authorities and institutions is far from simple—something you as an administrator in the field know all too well. Almost all authorities face the same typical challenges:

Multiple dispersed sites.

No matter if we are talking about a branch office, municipality in a regional district, schools or several public data centres, nearly all public institutions’ IT departments are faced with trying to manage and support dispersed locations. One approach to the problem is having satellites at every location (not to be confused with agents that have to be installed on all monitored devices). These satellites collect each location’s monitoring data, encrypt them and send them to the central location responsible for the evaluation and storage of the data. This keeps costs down, ensures operating and maintenance work is manageable, and gives you a complete overview of the IT.

Heterogeneous IT landscapes.

Integrating branch offices, existing structures, hardware and software, virtualisation. Public institutions’ networks are heterogeneous and devices and applications have their own monitoring tools. These may give us certain insights, but they don’t help gain an overview of the complete IT. This is where universal solutions come in that monitor devices and applications regardless of their manufacturer, and special solutions that can be integrated into the monitoring process. The decisive factors here are, on the one hand, the standardisation of the solution in order to keep costs low and, on the other hand, the flexibility to connect existing special solutions via suitable interfaces.

Sensitive data.

Authorities and public institutions manage their citizens’ sensitive data. Together with public utility companies, municipalities ensure the supply of water, electricity and gas. Local fire and police departments must always be ready to go at the drop of a hat. None of this would be possible without a reliable and secure IT landscape. Firewalls, virus scanners and backup systems are standard components of an integrated security concept, but these systems also have to run reliably. Was that backup successful? Is the firewall working? Is the virus scanner up-to-date? A holistic monitoring solution can cover all these aspects.
