The intelligence of things – How AIoT is automating processes.

Connected machines are no longer just collecting data—they are increasingly becoming intelligent co‑thinkers. By combining IoT data with artificial intelligence, AIoT automates processes autonomously. For organisations, this marks a fundamental shift that helps save working time, reduce costs and secure competitive advantages. Discover which role AI agents play in this context and why IT infrastructure is a key factor.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has connected countless devices, but it is now reaching its limits. While IoT systems generate data, they rarely draw conclusions from it. This is exactly where AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) comes in—combining sensor technology with artificial intelligence. “IoT delivers data, but AI creates the real added value,” explains Stefan Schweiger, Business Manager AIoT Solutions at Bechtle. For him, AIoT is a logical next step that is set to revolutionise many processes.

While traditional IoT shows what is happening, AIoT goes a step further by taking over entire processes and automating them.

From observer to actor.

The key difference between traditional IoT and AIoT lies in the ability to act. Many companies already collect data but do not use it consistently. In semiconductor plants, for example, IoT sensors generate a mountain of data every day—the equivalent of around 42 million A4 pages of text—to identify faults and inefficient processes. These issues, however, are not resolved by IoT systems themselves, but instead require extensive manual intervention by people. Against this backdrop, AI becomes a game changer, as it transforms IoT from an observer into an actor. “While traditional IoT shows what is happening, AIoT goes a step further by taking over entire processes and automating them.”

The rise of digital agents.

AI agents are playing a key role in this development. While many organisations are only just beginning to explore generative AI, the next stage of evolution is already emerging in the form of agentic AI, which not only analyses data but independently executes workflows, taking IoT to an entirely new level. For example, AI agents can identify maintenance requirements for manufacturing machines and assign the relevant tasks to service staff—including an optimal route to each maintenance point. Automated processes like these eliminate many manual activities, freeing up resources, reducing costs and increasing customer satisfaction.

Without robust networks, platforms and IT security, AIoT is not possible.

The challenge of IT infrastructure.

The path to the automated factory, however, requires a suitable IT infrastructure. “For AI to deliver tangible value, it needs large volumes of data. That data has to be generated,” says Stefan Schweiger. Without stable networks, platforms and IT security, this just isn’t possible.” The real challenge, therefore, is not the technology itself, but integrating it into existing processes and structures. Reliable IT partners such as Bechtle, which take a holistic approach to infrastructure, security and operations, support companies along this journey.

Strategy matters, not the technology.

AIoT is a strategic decision that shapes a company’s long‑term viability. Simply monitoring machines means missing out on potential; enabling them to think with AI creates real scope for action. Bechtle supports organisations on this journey with a holistic approach—from sensor technology and hardware to networks and IT security, through to managed services that take over day‑to‑day operations. In addition, we identify optimisation potential and continuously evolve our customers’ AIoT environments. With us, the “intelligence of things” is not a future vision, but a practical technology that SMEs can leverage today to ease the load on their teams, automate processes and deliver measurable results.
