Objective:
Participants will be familiar with the basic concepts of a network.
Content:
- Basics - The concept of networking, purpose and history
- Use case example with a Windows test domain, infrastructure components, clients
- Topologies - Bus, star, ring, mesh, cloud
- Network components - Router, hubs, switches, bridges, gateway (Proxy), repeater, access point, multi-layer switch, firewall
- Connectivity technology - Cable, fibre, WLAN, Bluetooth, other
- Ports and protocols
- Network protocols; TCP/IP basics (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol); IP address format; IPv4 vs. IPv6; routing; private IP spaces; APIPA
- Assigning and creating IP addresses - DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), static addressing, NAT (Network Address Translation), DNS (Domain Name System) - name resolution, sub and supernetting; no. of IP addresses
- Analysing networks - Tools and applications, troubleshooting
- The OSI reference model (Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model), layers and assignment
