Challenge.

For Software AG—a company built on the development and sale of software products—IT security is paramount, and the modernisation and digitalisation of its IT landscape have been central to the company’s HELIX transformation programme, launched in 2019. However, following a security incident in October 2021, these efforts needed to accelerate dramatically. The goals were clear: roll out a new network and modern security gateways on a global scale, advance the cloud-first strategy, and reduce the number of data centres from 40 to three. The ultimate objective? Automate processes, streamline operations, and create future-proof IT. Global supply bottlenecks and COVID-19 restrictions demanded flexibility and quick decision-making to keep the initiative on track.

There aren’t many large systems integrators capable of delivering such a complex, international project on such short notice. Even in normal circumstances, exporting the required hardware and software to countries like India involves navigating complex customs and import regulations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this became even more challenging. What Bechtle accomplished was nothing short of a logistical triumph. Migrating to the new network and replacing gateways while operations continued demanded expertise, flexibility, and teamwork—all qualities Bechtle demonstrated in abundance.

Solution.

Bechtle initially presented a range of vendor-neutral solutions. Software AG selected Cisco Systems as its network provider and Palo Alto Networks security gateways to replace legacy VPN connections. However, detailed planning revealed the unique challenges of the pandemic: delivery times of up to 18 months necessitated creative problem-solving. To overcome these hurdles, project leaders consolidated all hardware and software deliveries to Germany rather than shipping directly to international branches. Managing and distributing approximately 33 tons of material was a remarkable logistical achievement by Bechtle. On-site, technicians installed new security gateways, switches, and WLAN access points—all while maintaining operational continuity. The tailored solution ensured minimal disruption. The Cisco network design incorporated Software-Defined Access (SD-Access) and Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) with integrated security and micro segmentation. To further enhance security, Bechtle implemented Palo Alto Networks’ Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) technology. Wide Area Networks (WAN) were consolidated into a cloud-native platform, enabling secure and efficient access to applications and data—whether from the office or working remotely.

Business benefits.

  • Global security – Cutting-edge policies with SASE and micro segmentation.
  • Effortless access – Secure and efficient data access, anytime, anywhere.
  • Pandemic-proof execution – Successful project management despite global restrictions.
