Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025 meaning no more security updates or technical support, which will open the door to considerable security, compliance and operational risks.

Critical factors to consider:

Security risks – Without any updates, devices running Windows 10 are more susceptible to security threats.
Potential options after EoS:
1. Upgrade to Windows 11 if your hardware is compatible
2. Continue to use Windows 10 with greater security risks
3. Extended Security Updates (ESU) if Microsoft offers them for your company
4. Switch to an alternative operating system, e.g. Linux, if an upgrade to Windows 11 is out of the question

Risks for local authorities with Windows 10 EoS.

Authorities that don’t make the switch from Windows 10 will face extensive risks, including:

1. Increased IT security risks.

No security updates means an increasing vulnerability to cyberattacks, e.g. through ransomware, phishing and more.
Confidential data related to citizens could be compromised which could result in data protection violations and legal ramifications (e.g. GDPR violations).

2. Downtimes and system instability.

Without regular updates, you run the risk of system incompatibility that will impact how applications run.
System failures may mean services can’t be provided as quickly which may have a domino effect for local authorities.

3. Greater costs.

Emergency measures to resolve security issues may eat up financial and personnel resources.
Not switching to a new OS soon enough could mean higher costs if short-term solutions are needed to bridge the gap.

4. End of third-party support.

Many software vendors and service providers may also end support for Windows 10. This may cause issues when it comes to using specialist software.
Additional problems may arise due to a lack of drive and hardware compatibility.

5. Lack of confidence among citizens.

A security breach or system outage may have a considerable impact on citizens’ trust in their local authority’s IT strategy and data security capabilities.
