What is two-factor authentication and how does it work?

IN A NUTSHELL

Two‑factor authentication (2FA) improves account security by adding a second verification step. Alongside your password, you’ll be asked to enter a one-time security code, which is sent to you by email or generated in an app.

How two‑factor authentication works

Basic principle

Two‑factor authentication adds an extra layer of protection to the standard sign‑in process. After entering your username and password, you confirm access with a second verification step.

Sign‑in process

  • Enter your username and password
  • Enter a six‑digit security code
  • Depending on your chosen method, you’ll receive the code either:
    • By email sent to your registered address, or
    • Through an authentication app (e.g. Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator)
  • Once both steps have been completed, you can sign in.

Benefits of two‑factor authentication

  • Increased security by combining a password with a one-time code

  • Protection against unauthorised access, even if the password becomes known

Ways of receiving the code

Method Description
Email

Authentication app
