How are LTO barcode labels correctly encoded?

IN A NUTSHELL

LTO barcode labels consist of eight alphanumeric characters. The first six can be chosen freely, while the final two identify the LTO media standard. Cleaning cartridges follow their own coding scheme.

Basics of LTO barcode encoding

LTO tapes need unique identifiers to ensure reliable recognition and consistent library management, with each barcode label made up of eight characters.

Structure of the barcode label

  • Characters 1–6: Freely selectable alphanumeric sequence (e.g. BD0001)
  • Characters 7–8: Media standard (e.g. L8 for LTO‑8)
  • For example, BD0001L8, BD0002L8

Numbering sequence

  • It is advisable to define a continuous numbering range.

  • New LTO tapes should be assigned numbers.

  • This approach ensures clear tracking and easy identification.

Meaning of the media‑standard identifier

The final two characters indicate the LTO generation or media type.

Cleaning cartridges

  • Cleaning cartridges also need clear and unambiguous identification.
  • Their label starts with “CLN”, followed by a sequential number and the media standard.
  • For example, CLN001L9, CLN002L9

Use in tape libraries

Barcode encoding for LTO media is standardised and vendor‑independent, meaning:

  • No matter if HPE, IBM, Quantum, Spectra Logic or Dell, all libraries read the same barcode formats.
  • An LTO tape labelled, for example, L8 or LY is recognised in every library as LTO‑8 or LTO‑8 WORM.
  • Clear identification enables fully automated management, including slot inventories, media pools, rotation and export/import.
